***

Barbara Grassi

BARBARA GRASSI (Italy / Black Trefoil Soul Club)

Obsessed with black music since late 80s, the “Little Miss Soul” is one of the promoters of the Black Trefoil Soul Club of Genova and resident DJ of the Leaning Tower Soul Club of Pisa. She has spent the last years travelling with her record box across Europe and UK. Home is where she can find good music, Soul lovers and a nice dancefloor!!! Although her (not so hidden …) love for 70s soul and Crossover, her sets are nothing but across-the-board. She really enjoyed attending at the Hamburg Soul Weekender two years ago, and now she is counting the days to play her favourite records there …

Tobi Lark – Sweep It Out In The Shed
The Sparkels – Try Love (One More Time)
Bonnie Herman – Hush Don’t Cry
Patrice Holloway – Stolen Hours
Rozetta Johnson – Mine Was Real
Linda Jones – My Heart Needs A Break
The Vel-vets – I Got To Find Me Somebody
The Constellations – I Don’t Know About You
The Hamilton Movement – She’s Gone
Charles Johnson – Never Had A Love So Good
Luther – Don’t Wanna Be A Fool

Roddy Brass

RODDY BRASS (U.K.)

Roddy Brass will travel from Edinburgh to the river Elbe to present his selection of soulmusic to the audience. As a teenager you could see him dancing on the „sacred“ floor of Wigan Casino, though later he preferred Stafford’s Top Of The World Club. Since the early eighties Roddy is one of the regular guests at the 100 Club Allnighter in London and he is the proud owner of its membershipcard with the magic number 007. Is there any better way for a person to be musically socialized?

Of The World Club in Stafford.

Paul Grant

PAUL GRANT (Ireland / POW CITY soul club)

Paul Grant was seriously bitten by the vinyl bug over 20 years ago after discovering the strange world of Northern Soul through the Irish mod/scooter scene. His passion for hearing, discovering and collecting these records quickly turned into an obsession and he started dj’ing on a regular basis at soul events and scooter rallies around Ireland. This led to various guest spots at venues in Dublin, Wales, Belfast, Paris, London, Hamburg, Leeds, Burnley and Manchester (places that have inspired him and shaped his musical tastes over the years).
He currently co-promotes a monthly soul club in Dublin called “Pow City” and djs quite regularly in the U.K. He likes to spin a variety of styles in his current sets with an emphasis on gritty and uptempo sounds and he still has that passion to make every set count.
For him it was an absolute pleasure dj’ing at the Hamburg weekender Alldayer in 2014 and he is thrilled to have the opportunity to do so again this year.

5 current Favorite Spins
Rudy Love & The Company Soul – Suffering Wrath (Canyon)
The Sacred Four – Somebody Watching You (Champ)
Sam Dees – Soul Sister (Lo Lo)
Pervis Lee – You Don’t Care (Leeway)
Lucille Mathis – I’m Not Your Regular Woman (A-Bet)

Tim Smithers

TIM SMITHERS (England)

TimSmithers first got into rare soul around 1977, started collecting soon after, favourite allnighters for him back then were Wigan and Yate. He started djing around the 90s, local do’s for Mark Jones, who he would later join up with to help promote The Bournemouth Railway Club, this was a fantastic club where anything and everything would get played, they still run these events today, but not as often as they would like. Tim has been lucky enough to have had some guest dj spots at some of the most forward thinking clubs in the U.K. and abroad, Empty Bottles, Soulfuntion, Rugby allnigter freestle room, Stoke, Kings Hall, Winsor Suite, Soul in the south allnighters, Bradford rare and underplayed, Southampton alldayers, Ghetto Soul and Lost Soul where he is now a resident.

Alfie Linney

ALFIE LINNEY (England)

Alfie has been collecting rare soul music since the age of 11, he is now 47. He has been djing since he was 13 … Alfie is a big fan of early Motown/Soul & RnB …

And he is very honoured to have been asked to play at this years’ Hamburg Soul Weekender in the RnB room on the Friday night.

Lars Bulnheim

LARS BULNHEIM (Austria)

As former promoter and resident of the “Shelter Club” and “Soul at the Mandarin Casino” Hamburg’s local hero Lars Bulnheim, nowadays living in Austria, has his unique collection spinning for quite a few years now. But Lars is also a nationwide and even European constant, you will regularly find him on the line up of in-demand soul events such as the Nuernberg and the Rimini Soul Weekender, just to name two. Though his musical focus is on 70s soul, excursions into the 60s are a natural part of his set. His magic touch in the selection of tunes and his feeling for the dancefloor guarantee exactly what a soul fan could wish for: danceable, stirring and soulful music!

Marc Forrest

MARC FORREST (Berlin / Hip City Soul Club)

Marc Forrest started DJing kind of accidentally at the former Mod Club Sigmundshof on New Year’s Eve 1986. He is regularly and exclusively playing soul music ever since as well as running the Hip City Soul Club Berlin since 1990. He almost went broke with the first German Soul Weekender which took place in 1990. He also did fanzines like “r&b time” and “Grapevine” as well as the radio shows “Soulful Shoes” (Radio 100) and “Harlem Shuffle” from the late 1980s to the mid 90s. After his first gig in London in 1991 he successfully played regular spots in Manchester, London’s 100 Club and the scandinavian soul nations Sweden and Norway.
“gimme two blocks line ’cause baby it’s r&b time”

Gerd Baum

GERD BAUM (Düsseldorf)

Gerd discovered his record collecting gene as a school kid and got into soul music a few years later via a mix-tape of a mate. Not much later he was asked to DJ at a local club- night in his then home-town Hamburg due to having amassed a tiny collection of soul tunes. From then on the collection grew and from time to time he was asked to dj at soul events all over Germany.
Nowadays he is living in Düsseldorf where he is promoting the D-Town Soul Club and has been djing all over Europe at events like the Barsoulona Soul Weekender, Black Trefoil Soul Club Genova, Movin’on Barcelona, Spider’s Web Edinburgh, Roma Soul City, Aberdeen Northern Soul Club, Nowt But Northern Glasgow, Black Music Power Anniversary Florence, Allnighter Ducale Parma …
He enjoys travelling a lot and loves listening and dancing to other peoples choices as much as playing records himself.
Being asked to dj at the Hamburg weekender feels very special for him as it is coming full circle.

Some of his favorite spins:
Papa Bear & The Cubs – You’re So Fine – (Sms)
Sweets – Something About My Baby – (Soultown)
Mel Britt – She’ll Come Running Back – (Fip)
Foreign Blue Renaissance – Finding You –(Kohoutech)

As the resident DJ of the Backdrop Soul Club he shared turntables with various guest DJs over the last 15 years. hendrik_irmscher_circle

HENDRIK IRMSCHER (Berlin / Soul’d Up – Berlin)

Hendrik Irmscher started his record journey 11 years ago by collecting 70s Punk/Powerpop, Mod-Revival and 60s Garage 45s.
At that time, Hendrik began DJing and organizing some regular parties in Berlin. Influenced by lots of different Mod-sounds, the road to the fantastic world of Soul music wasn’t that far off. Since then he has been specializing in collecting Northern Soul and Rare Soul 45s. After lots of Soul parties in smallish basement clubs in Kreuzberg, Hendrik recently started promoting bigger events under the flag of “Soul’d Up – Berlin”. Two times a year (30th May and 21st November 2015) he celebrates an Alldayer & Allnighter with international guest DJs. He has also had guest appearances here and there, including Marc Forrest’s “Hip City Soul Club” NYE Special, “For Dancers Only” & “Motte Allnighter” in Hamburg, “ECSC Weekender” in Seattle, “STUSA Weekender” & “Windy City Soul Club” in Chicago … and feels honoured to spin his tunes for another time at Hamburg Soul Weekender.

Ten 45s straight from his playbox:
Willie Brown – I Think I’ll Fall In Love [TRI-SOM]
Coke – Got To Touch Your Face [SOUND TRIANGLE]
Roy Simon – I’m Waiting On Your Love [PAPER MOON]
Ray Hines – Is It Something You Got [RNH]
Billy Byrd – Lost In The Crowd [SCREAM]
Illusions – Shake Your Mini [SHOWTIME]
Tony Troutman – What’s The Use [JERRY]
Jimmy Burns – Can’t Get Over [Dispo]
Barbara Jean & The Lyrics – Any Two Can Play It [BIG HIT]
Minnie Jones – Shadow Of A Memory [SUGAR]

Baster

BASTER (Hamburg / The Cole Slaw Club)

In Hamburg he is well-known as former host and resident DJ of the “For Dancers Only” Allnighters and besides he owns a music-bar in St. Pauli called “Komet”. If he is not mixing drinks at his bar, he indulges himself in his passion for “oldie” music. Baster loves danceable R’n’B, he is looking forward to the Hamburg Soul Weekender and – according to his own proclamation – he fancies a “Schnaps” once in a while.

Thorsten Dietsche & Stefan Christiansen

STEFAN CHRISTIANSEN (Flensburg) & THORSTEN DIETSCHE (Hamburg)

Their love for old vinyl grew only recently, but very soon Stef Christiansen and Thorsten Dietsche were given their first opportunities for spinning their records to an audience. And they discovered that it is much more fun to do this together. In 2011 they founded the Cool Cat Club in Flensburg, which in the meantime has found it’s second home at the Komet Bar in Hamburg. Musically speaking the both of them are moving between 50s and 60s, mixing Rhythm & Blues and Popcorn with related sounds from this time. They are very happy to play their favourite R&B records once more at the Hamburg Soul Weekender No. 10.

 Merten Kaatz

MERTEN KAATZ (Hamburg / Cree Records)

Merten Kaatz has been djing for quite some time now, his emphasis lying on afro american music. He has been co-founder of Hamburg’s ’Shelter Club’ and now is the brains behind Cree Records.
He is responsible for a variety of reissues, from German Garage Rock to Northern and Modern Soul and also Disco Funk from Namibia. It was only recently that he compiled the much appraised compilation ’Nappy Music Man’ with Funk Disco Calypso productions from Trinidad. It’s where he is hanging around at the moment, digging in backyards and cellars for more forgotten gems …
