That he is considered by many in the british Soul Scene as the most influential DJ in the last twenty years? That his record collection holds about 50 000 forty-fives, that he still digs out danceable ultra rarities and that in his dj history he was the first to play tunes like Delegates Of Soul – I’ll Come Running Back, Tony Galla – In Love, Jesse James – It’s Allright, The Hamilton Movement – She’s Gone, The New Wanderers – Ain’t Gonna Do You No Harm, Tolbert – I’ve Got It, The Saints – I’ll Let You Slide, Roy Roberts – Got To Have Your Love, Dave Charles – Ain’t Gonna Cry No More, The Imperial C’s – Someone Tell Her, The Sensations – Demanding Man, Kurt Harris – Emperor Of My Baby’s Heart, Robert Tanner – Sweet Memories oder Bob and Fred – I’ll Be On My Way? That he belongs to the regular djs of the 100 club and that he spends nearly every weekend to travel the world, inspiring soul fans? That Markus Gora would give his teeth for a cover up played by Butch at the Bamberg Weekender? Well, actually it is quite enough to say that we are very happy to have him with us at the weekender and advise everybody not to miss any of his sets. Pure magic!

John started djin back around 1990 when he ran a soul night every sunday in Birmingham for about a year. After that he got spots here and there. Finally started getting regular spots at a place called the Lea Manor, this place at the time started to get a reputation for playing soul music that was a little bit different because most places were playing bog standard oldies. In 2006 he was asked to be one of the resident DJs at Middleton Allnighter. Other places he recently played at include: Spiders Webb-Edinburgh / Greatstone-Manchester / Bretby Allniter / Lowton / Lea Manor-Albrighton

John begann um 1990 herum aufzulegen, als er ungefähr ein Jahr lang jeden Sonntag eine Soul Nacht in Birmingham veranstaltete. Danach legte er mal hier, mal da auf. Schließlich bekam er regelmäßige Termine in einem Club namens ‚Lea Manor’, dieser Ort war damals gerade dabei, sich einen Namen damit zu machen, „etwas andere“ Soulmusik zu spielen, denn in den meisten Clubs wurden eigentlich nur durchschnittliche Standard Oldies gespielt. 2006 wurde John gefragt, ob er einer der Residents beim Middleton Allnighter werden wolle. Andere Clubs, in denen er aufgelegt hat, sind unter Anderem: Spiders Webb-Edinburgh / Greatstone-Manchester / Bretby Allniter / Lowton / Lea Manor-Albrighton.

Obsessed with black music since late 80s, the “Little Miss Soul” is one of the promoters of the Black Trefoil Soul Club of Genova and resident DJ of the Leaning Tower Soul Club of Pisa. She has spent the last years travelling with her record box across Europe and UK. Home is where she can find good music, Soul lovers and a nice dancefloor!!! Although her (not so hidden …) love for 70s soul and Crossover, her sets are nothing but across-the-board. She really enjoyed attending at the Hamburg Soul Weekender two years ago, and now she is counting the days to play her favourite records there …

In den späten 80ern begann ihre Leidenschaft für Black Music, heute ist „Little Miss Soul“ Promoterin des Black Trefoil Soul Clubs in Genua und resident DJ des Leaning Tower Soul Club in Pisa. Seit Jahren reist Barbara mit ihrer Plattenbox quer durch Europa und UK, ihr Zuhause ist immer dort, wo sie gute Musik, Soul-Fans und einen guten Tanzboden vorfindet!!! Obwohl ihre ( nicht gerade verheimlichte) Vorliebe 70s Soul und Crossover gilt, decken ihre Sets die ganze Bandbreite ab. Vor zwei Jahren hatte sie als Gast bereits sehr viel Spaß beim Hamburg Soul Weekender und nun zählt sie die Tage, bis sie selbst dort ihre liebsten Platten auflegen wird …
MARC FORREST (Berlin / Hip City Soul Club)
Marc Forrest started DJing kind of accidentally at the former Mod Club Sigmundshof on New Year’s Eve 1986. He is regularly and exclusively playing soul music ever since as well as running the Hip City Soul Club Berlin since 1990. He almost went broke with the first German Soul Weekender which took place in 1990. He also did fanzines like “r&b time” and “Grapevine” as well as the radio shows “Soulful Shoes” (Radio 100) and “Harlem Shuffle” from the late 1980s to the mid 90s. After his first gig in London in 1991 he successfully played regular spots in Manchester, London’s 100 Club and the scandinavian soul nations Sweden and Norway.

Marc Forrest legt seit einem eher zufällig geborenen Engagement im damaligen Berliner Mod Keller Sigmundshof zum Silvesterfest 1986 regelmäßig und ausschließlich Soul auf. Seit 1990 veranstaltet er regelmäßig den Hip City Soul Club Berlin. 1990 trieb er sich beinahe mit dem ersten deutschen Soul Weekender in den Ruin. Bereits Ende der achtziger bis in die neunziger Jahre hinein kamen noch Fanzine Projekte wie etwa „r&b time“ und „grapevine“ wie auch eigene wöchentliche Radiosendungen wie „soulful shoes“ (radio 100) und „Harlem shuffle“ (MDR) hinzu. Nach dem ersten Gig in London 1991 hat er bereits erfolgreich regelmäßig in Manchester, Londons 100 Club und den skandinavischen Soulnationen Schweden und Norwegen aufgelegt.

LEO ERNST (Bavaria)
When he was a young mod, Leo learned about soul at allnighters in Austria and Italy. In his opinion soul goes through the ears, through the heart and then directly into the legs – Leo likes dancing and he is rather dj than collector. He started djing in Landsberg/Lech at a regular Mod / Soulnighter and in the 90s he played at various local scooterruns and allnighters in Bavaria and Austria. At the Deeper Shade nighter at the Atomic Café in Munich he has been resident dj from 1997 until 2008. Nowadays he is part of the Target Club dj team at the Ba-ba-lu in Munich. And he was guest dj at the Beat the Clock Weekender in Cologne, Summer Safari and Soulsurgery in Leipzig as at many other small allnighters. Leo is very happy to be present in Hamburg this year – he feels very honoured!
Hat den Soul als junger Mod auf Allnightern in Österreich und Italien kennengelernt. Für Leo geht der Soul von den Ohren über das Herz direkt in die Beine – er tanzt gern und ist mehr Plattenaufleger als Sammler. Als DJ angefangen in Landsberg/Lech in mit einem regelmäßigen Mod / Soul Clubabend über diverse lokale bayerische und österreichische Rollertreffen und Allnighter in den Neunzigern, bis zum Deeper Shade Abend im Atomic Café in München als Resident DJ von 1997 bis 2008. Jetzt Teil des Target Club DJ Teams im Ba-ba-lu in München. Auch ein paar Gastspiele beim Beat the Clock Weekender in Köln, bei der Summer Safari und Soulsurgery in Leipzig und bei diversen kleineren Allnightern. Mit in Hamburg dabei zu sein freut ihn sehr, das ist ihm eine Ehre!
PETER WERHAND (Neuwied / Soul Experience Allnighter)
Peter Werhand, born 1970, made his first contact with soul when he got to know his first mods and scooterboys in his hometown Neuwied. Since then regular shopping trips to England helped him stocking up on his record collection and in 1989 he hosted his first own Soulallnighter. In the beginning of the 90s Peter was a regular at scooter rallies, often being the only DJ for the whole weekend. Over the years he has organized several soulallnighters and also has been guest dj at many nighters in Germany and England. Together with his friend Carsten Fox he gave distinction to the „Soul Experience“ allnighter. Many well-known german and international djs have been guests at those allnighter series which started in 1999. Since many years Peter is a regular dj at the Nürnberg Soulweekender. He has a passion for classic northern soul with a touch of crossover.
Ersten Kontakt mit Northern Soul hatte Peter Werhand, 1970 geboren, als er die ersten Mods und Scooterboys 1987 in seiner Heimatstadt Neuwied kennenlernte. Über kurze Zeit wurde durch Einkaufstripps in England ein Grundstock der heutigen Plattensammlung gelegt und 1989 der erste eigene Soullallnighter veranstaltet. Anfang der neunziger Jahre war Peter häufig auf Rollertreffen wo er komplette Wochenenden als alleiniger DJ gestaltet hat! Über die Jahre veranstaltete er immer wieder Soulallnighter und hatte eigene Einladungen bei vielen Veranstaltungen in Deutschland und England. Zusammen mit seinem Freund Carsten Fox prägte er ab 1999 die „Soul Experience“ Allnighter Serie bei der auch immer wieder namhafte deutsche und internationale DJs zu Gast waren. Seit vielen Jahren ist Peter fester Bestandteil als DJ beim Nürnberg Soulweekender. Dabei gilt seine Leidenschaft dem klassischen Northern Soul mit leichtem Hang zum Crossover.

STEFAN KUBERNUS (Münster)
Stefan Kubernus has not only been a true fan of classic soul music for more than two decades now, but he is also a hopeless vinyl junkie. He gets invited as a DJ everywhere, let it be Frankfurt, Hamburg or Bamberg. His collection is known to be one of the best in Germany. So that his loved ones do not get dusty, he shares them with us as a DJ.
Stefan’s repertoire varies from selected northern soul tunes to 70s moderrn and crossover. There is always a tune in his set you have never heard before. His qualities as a DJ he shows in putting a classic next to an unknown tune in a perfect balance.
Seit fast 2 Jahrzehnten ist Stefan Kubernus nicht nur ein treuer Fan klassischer Soulmusik, sondern auch ein unverbesserlicher Vinyljunkie. Überall, ob in Frankfurt, Nürnberg, Hamburg oder in Bamberg wird er als DJ eingeladen. Seine Sammlung gilt als eine der besten hierzulande Damit die Platten nicht einstauben, teilt er seine Schätze mit uns als DJ. Sein Repertoire reicht dabei von ausgewählten Northern-Soul-tunes bis zu 70ts Modern und Crossover. Es gibt immer etwas, was man noch nie vorher gehört hat in seinen Sets. Seine Qualität als DJ zeigt sich in der Ausgewogenheit, mit der er den Klassiker neben dem unbekannten Song stellt.
LARS BULNHEIM (HH / Shelter Club)
As promoter and resident of the “Shelter Club” and “Soul at the Mandarin Casino” Hamburg’s local hero Lars Bulnheim has his unique collection spinning for quite a few years now. But Lars is also a nationwide and even European constant, you will regularly find him on the line up of in-demand soul events such as the Nuernberg and the Rimini Soul Weekender, just to name two. Though his musical focus is on 70s soul, excursions into the 60s are a natural part of his set. His magic touch in the selection of tunes and his feeling for the dancefloor guarantee exactly what a soul fan could wish for: danceable, stirring and soulful music!
Der Hamburger Lokalmatador Lars Bulnheim bringt seit vielen Jahren als Resident DeeJay und Veranstalter des „Shelter Clubs“ und „Soul at the Mandarin Casino“ seine einzigartige Plattensammlung zum Rotieren. Aber auch überregional ist Lars seit langem eine feste Größe, regelmäßig findet man ihn im Line Up anspruchsvoller Soul Events wie dem Nürnberger und dem Rimini Soul Weekender, um nur zwei zu nennen. Der musikalische Schwerpunkt liegt bei Lars auf Seventies Soul, Ausflüge zu den Sixties gehören aber selbstverständlich auch mit zum Programm. Das glückliche Händchen bei der Auswahl seiner Platten und das Gespür für den Dancefloor garantieren genau das, was man sich als Soul Fan wünscht: tanzbare, mitreißende beseelte Musik!
PACO (HH / Delicious Biscuits)
Paco is one of the younger soul djs in Hamburg. Since he first laid his hands on the Goldmine compilations he became curious. In Hamburg he finally found what he was looking for – for the older soulies it had been the allnighters at the KIR club, but for him it were the local nighters such as Spellbound, Shelter Club and For Dancers Only. You can hear it in his sets where he got his soul socialization from. Moreover he is a fan of slower tunes. He also likes to play songs that may not be worth their weight in gold but are still wonderful. For quite a long time he has organized the Elbe Rhythm’n’Soul Club, together with Martin Crout. Paco has been guest dj at various Hamburg soulnighters and apart from that, he plays constantly (together with The Upsetter) under the name of “Double Dynamite” rocksteady and soul in smaller locations, as bars and pubs. Regularly he is guest DJ at the Summer Soul Sensation in Bielefeld. And as host of the soul nighter “Delicious Biscuits” (together with DJ Inger, who djs at the alldayer this year) he follows his pleasure for modern tunes. Three times a year he invites DJs to play their modern and disco maxis and have a good time. Paco is also hosting a soul calender for Hamburg, called discomoden.blogspot.com.
Paco, einer der jüngeren Soul-DJs in Hamburg. Als ihm die ersten Goldmine Sampler in die Hände gefallen waren, machte er sich auf die Suche nach mehr. Und in Hamburg wurde er fündig. Was für die alten Hasen die Allnighter im Kir waren, waren für ihn Spellbound, Shelter Club und For Dancers Only. Die Soulsozialisation in Hamburg kann man immer mal wieder aus den Sets heraushören. Außerdem darf es auch gerne mal langsamer sein. Gerne spielt er auch Stücke die nicht in Gold aufgewogen werden müssen und doch so schön sind. Er hat lange mit Martin Crout den Elbe Rhythm’n’Soul Club organisiert. Paco ist immer mal wieder zu Gast bei Hamburger Veranstaltungen und legt auch gerne mit dem Upsetter, als „Double Dynamite“, Rocksteady und Soul im kleineren Rahmen auf. Regelmäßig ist er in Bielefeld bei der Summer Soul Sensation zu Gast. Und mit „Delicious Biscuits“ sorgt er dreimal im Jahr dafür, dass die DJs auch mal völlig schamlos nach Lust und Laune ihre Maxis von Modern bis Disco auflegen können. Im Netz kümmert er sich mit discomoden.blogspot.com um einen kleinen Soulkalender für Hamburg.
FRANK V.I.P. HITMAN (HH / Soul Allnighter@Motte)
When grandma’s music shack stopped cooking up that lovely soul stew and the illegal dances were truly a thing of the past, the only way to get some of that sweet soul music was to Go West. Suddenly Granny’s crumble pie as well as the crumbling wall made life then oh so very sweet indeed. This time with the ok from the boys in blue and no planned escape route laid out just in case, the Chain Gang Soundsystem and The Northern Soul Family Allnighter in Hamburg were now Right On Brothers!!!! After that, somehow a daytrip to London in 1996 turned into a decade of all kind of silliness. The odd backroom of a restaurant, where all sorts of things were dropped including vegetables & records, was just one of dem shebeens. Other places where the good old stomper was played next to some Jamaican wax by yours truly was Stereotonic, Copasetic Soundsystem, Reggae Shack and Mint. The last few years were spent either before, behind but very rarely underneath the decks @ For Dancers Only, Kings’n’Queens Sea Cruise, Atomic Cafe, Roter Salon, Hamburg Alldayer and of course the Northern Soul Allnighter @ Motte in Hamburg!!!!
Als Omas Soul Platten nicht mehr ausreichten um die illegalen Tanzveranstaltungen zum Kochen zu bringen, brauchte man nun den Stoff direkt aus dem gelobten Abendland. Nun gab es endlich nicht nur Löcher im Käse, sondern auch einige in der dicken Wand und ab ging die Polonäse auch mal durch Blankenese. Diesmal aber ganz offiziell und ohne abenteuerliche Geschichten mit dem Chain Gang Soundsystem und dem Northern Soul Family Allnighter in Hamburg. Anno 1996 war dann Stunde X!!!! Aus einem Tagesausflug wurden dann mal eben 11 Jahre London. Der Stereotonic Club, Reggae Shack, Mint, Copasetic Soundsystem und das eine oder andere italienische Hinterzimmer eines Restaurants waren nicht nur Orte für hektische Handbewegungen, sondern auch für musikalische Höheflüge und den ein oder anderen Backdrop. In den letzten Jahren kamen die 45ziger dann öfters bei For Dancers Only, Kings’n’Queens Sea Cruise, Atomic Cafe, Roter Salon, Hamburg Alldayer und natürlich beim Northern Soul Allnighter in der Motte in Hamburg zum Einsatz.
THORSTEN WEGNER (HH / Pure Soul Records)
Our favourite vinyl dealer Thorsten from Hamburg – one part of www.puresoul.de is also with us! As he would have come to the weekender anyway, we talked him into bringing along some of his great 7“s and to play them in his very own style. Comments: “He always seems a bit scatterbrained” or “He can barely use the equipment”. I would say: “You can dance on it for sure!”
Thorsten, unser Lieblings-Plattenhändler aus Hamburg, eine Hälfte von www.puresoul.de, ist auch dabei. Da er sowieso als Gast gekommen wäre, haben wir ihn ermuntert ein paar seiner tollen Platten mitzubringen und in seiner sehr eigenen Art aufzulegen. Kommentare: „Er wirkt stets etwas verhuschelt“ oder aber “He can barely use the equipment.”

Tolbert is djing since the early 90s. Starting with rare groove sounds and funk, he more and more got into soul. His heart belongs especially to 70s and crossover soul. For a while being he is running the Rare Pleasure Soul Club nights in Hamburg. Eventually Tolbert will get himself everything from SOUL!
Tolbert legt seit Anfang der 90er Jahre Soul und Funk-Platten auf. Lag sein Schwerpunkt in der Musikauswahl zunächst auf Rare Groove Sounds und Funk, verlagerte sich dieser jedoch immer mehr hin zum Soul. Sein Herz hat Tolbert insbesondere an 70’s und Crossover-Soul verloren. Seit einiger Zeit veranstaltet er in Hamburg den Rare Pleasure Soul Club. Irgendwann holt sich Tolbertsen alles von SOUL!
THE JAN (HH / For Dancers Only)
The Jan is an early mod from Hamburg. In the early 80s he started the mod fanzine “Modern Boys” with Olaf Ott (Soul Allnighter). Today he books bands at Hamburg’s Club Hafenklang. And once a month The Jan makes his audience spin to (mainly mid-tempo) Northern Soul and R’n’B treasures at “For Dancers Only”. He might give in to his hidden passion for modern soul at this weekend …
The Jan ist Hamburger Mod der ersten Stunde. Bereits in den frühen 80er Jahren gründete er mit Olaf Ott (Soul Allnighter) das Mod Fanzine „Modern Boys“. Mittlerweile ist er Band-Booker im Hafenklang. Und einmal im Monat bringt The Jan bei „For Dancers Only“ sein Publikum mit (bevorzugt mid-tempo) Northern Soul und R’n’B Perlen zum Kreiseln. Seiner unausgelebten Leidenschaft für Modern Soul wird er möglicherweise an diesem Wochenende nachgeben …
RALF MEHNERT (Hamburg)
In 1986 a mini mod danced rather bad than good at Olaf Ott’s and Leif Nüske’s Christmas “Soul Allnighter” at the Kir/Hamburg and bought his first Kent and Soul Supply compilations. At this point Ralf Mehnert could not know that his romantic teenage relationship would turn into a love affair lasting for more than twenty years now. He followed his first DJ appearance at the Kiel Scooterrun with sets at various scooter runs and allnighters all over Germany as well as at the “Cleethorpes Soul Weekender” and the “These Old Shoes Niter” in London. Until 2003 Ralf regularly played the “Turnin’ Your Heartbeat Up” Weekender in Nuernberg. In 2006 he and The Jan decided to finally kick off the first Hamburg Soul Weekender.
